Badgerfolk Ranger with Spears — Duncan Shadow Miniatures

Badgerfolk Ranger with Spears — Duncan Shadow Miniatures - Ottsworkshop

Badgers have always had a bit of a reputation in folklore. Stubborn, fierce, surprisingly difficult to shift once they've decided on something. So honestly, making them into a warrior culture makes a lot of sense. These Badgerfolk Rangers feel like a natural fit for that kind of lore — the sort of faction that guards its territory quietly and without fuss, until it absolutely doesn't.

We've got three sculpts in this set from Duncan Shadow, and each one brings something a little different. The standing figure on the left holds a spear upright in a calm, sentinel pose — this one reads as a guard or patrol type, very composed. The figure at the top right is mid-movement, gripping a spear horizontally, lantern hanging from its belt, which gives it a brilliant night-watch or scout feel. Then the front figure is the aggressive one, snarling with its spear levelled forward — genuinely one of the more characterful sculpts we've seen in this style.

Detail across all three is strong. The studded jerkins have a real weight to them, and the fur texture on the arms and legs is clean enough to hold a drybrush nicely without losing the finer lines. Faces are expressive — particularly the snarling front sculpt — without crossing into cartoonish. These sit comfortably at 28–32mm scale and would fit right into most fantasy tabletop settings.

For painting, we'd suggest starting with a dark basecoat and working up with drybrushing on the fur — grey or warm brown both read well. The studded armour gives you a good excuse to pick out individual rivets if you enjoy that kind of detail work. Nothing on these sculpts is going to punish a mid-level painter, but there's definitely room to push them further if you want to.

If you're building out a wider animalfolk warband, these pair really well with other creature-folk rangers. We also stock the Fox Folk Ranger from Cast n Play which has a similarly grounded, practical feel — different aesthetic but the same general energy if you're mixing factions.

The Badgerfolk Miniatures collection has more options if you're looking to build out a full unit or want some variety in roles. Whether you're dropping these into a homebrew campaign, using them as NPCs, or just painting them because they look brilliant on a shelf — we think they're genuinely worth your time.
