There's something genuinely irresistible about the idea of small, determined creatures donning full plate armour and marching off to war. Mice as warriors tap into a long tradition of folklore and fantasy — the underdog made dangerous, the tiny made terrifying. Duncan Shadow has leaned into that idea brilliantly here, and the result is a set of miniatures that immediately grab your attention on the shelf.

The Cultist Mouse set comes with three distinct sculpts, each with its own personality. The standout for us is the centre figure — a stocky, armoured mouse kneeling with a broad sword held across its body, wearing a large mushroom-cap style helmet with a hole punched through the top. It's a striking silhouette. The other two sculpts stand upright and carry different weapons, one brandishing what looks like a forked blade and the other raising a clenched fist. All three wear layered armour with genuine texture and detail — buckles, pauldrons, scaled sections — and the faces have real character, with beaked snouts and narrowed, determined expressions. These are animalfolk miniatures done properly.

The scale and proportions are deliberately chunky and stylised — these aren't going for hyper-realism. The heads are large, the bodies compact and powerful. That actually works in your favour when it comes to painting, because the detail reads clearly even at arm's length across a game table. Raised surfaces on the armour will take a drybrush brilliantly, and there's enough recessed shadow on the face and body to make a simple wash do a lot of the heavy lifting.

If you want something in a similar vein but with a slightly different tone, the Mouse Folk Raiders from Epic Miniatures are worth a look — more of a ragtag adventurer feel compared to the disciplined, armoured warrior energy of these Duncan Shadow sculpts.
As a set these work genuinely well together. Run them as a small cultist faction, a trio of rival warriors, or just sprinkle them through an urban undercity encounter as something unexpected for your players to stumble across. They're compact enough that they won't dominate a dungeon tile but detailed enough that players will absolutely notice them.
Duncan Shadow consistently produces sculpts with this kind of confident, slightly grimdark character — if you haven't explored their range before, it's well worth browsing the full Duncan Shadow collection to see what else catches your eye. There's a real consistency of style across the range that makes building a themed force genuinely satisfying.
These are available now at Otts Workshop, printed to order in the UK. If you've got questions about scale, print material, or which sculpt works best for a specific project, just drop us a message — we're always happy to help.
