Necromancers are arcane specialists who study and manipulate the boundary between life and death, channelling negative energy to animate corpses, commune with spirits, drain vitality from living creatures, and unravel the natural processes of decay and mortality. Their knowledge spans funerary rites, planar theory concerning the afterlife, the anatomy of undead creatures, and the mechanics of soul binding. While the practice is condemned by most religious institutions and many governments, necromancy exists on a spectrum — from scholars seeking to understand death as a natural force to practitioners who raise armies of undead in pursuit of power or immortality. In fantasy RPG settings, necromancers appear as isolated researchers, servants of undead lords, leaders of death cults, and figures whose ambitions bring them into conflict with both the living and the divine. They feature in campaigns involving undead plagues, desecrated burial grounds, lichdom rituals, planar incursions from the Shadowfell, and the moral questions that arise when the dead are denied their rest.
