Summoners are spellcasters who specialise in calling forth creatures, spirits, and entities from other planes or distant locations to serve, fight, or act as intermediaries in the material world. Their craft requires precise knowledge of the beings they invoke — their nature, motivations, vulnerabilities, and the terms under which they can be bound — as a summoning gone wrong can turn a controlled servant into an uncontrolled threat. Some summoners forge deep bonds with a single powerful entity known as an eidolon or familiar, while others maintain a broad catalogue of creatures they can call upon situationally. In fantasy RPG settings, summoners appear as planar researchers, commanders who augment their forces with extraplanar allies, ritualists who serve as intermediaries between mortal societies and powerful beings, and figures whose ambitions outpace their ability to control what they have called forth. They feature in campaigns involving planar incursions, demonology, spirit courts, arcane academies, and encounters where the line between summoner and the summoned becomes dangerously blurred.
