Picture this in your next dungeon encounter: your players stride into a dimly lit courtyard, spot an old guillotine in the corner, and decide it's just set dressing. Maybe one of them even leans against it. That's the moment this miniature earns its keep.
The Guillotine Mimic from Cast n Play is genuinely one of the more creative sculpts we've stocked. The whole thing reads as a guillotine — wooden frame, rope, lunette — right up until you look closer and realise it's alive. Multiple eyes bulge from the frame, a huge maw tears open where the blade should be, and a coiled tongue spills out from the base. Tentacles curl around the structure like the creature is wearing the guillotine as a costume. It's brilliantly grotesque in the best possible way.
The set actually comes with two versions: the Guillotine Mimic in full attack pose, and a regular Guillotine that looks completely innocent sitting on its own base. That's a genuinely clever touch — you can place the plain one on the table first and swap it out for the monster version the moment your players trigger the ambush. Instant drama, zero prep.
Mimics as a concept have been floating around folklore and fantasy for a long time — the idea of a predator that disguises itself as something mundane to lure in prey. Most miniature ranges stick to the classic chest. This one leans into the execution-device angle, which is a much darker, more theatrical take on the same idea. If you do want a chest version on the table alongside it, we stock a few solid options in our mimic miniatures collection worth a look.
Print quality on Cast n Play files is consistently good — clean lines, strong surface detail, and the kind of texture work that actually reads once painted. The suggested base size is 35mm, and the sculpt sits on a round base included in the render. The wooden grain on the frame, the fleshy folds around the eyes, the ridged texture on the tentacles — all of it is there in the sculpt and should paint up really well with a wash or two.
This one sits comfortably in our aberration miniatures range alongside other weird, fleshy, hard-to-classify creatures. It's also a brilliant Halloween game centrepiece if you're running a one-shot with a gothic or horror flavour.
If you've not explored Cast n Play's full range before, this is a good entry point — they have a real knack for taking a familiar monster type and doing something unexpected with it. The Guillotine Mimic is exactly that kind of sculpt: familiar enough to fool your players, strange enough to genuinely surprise them.
