Ogres have been stomping through folklore for a very long time. Big, bad-tempered, and built like a small house — they're one of those creatures that just works at the table. Whether you're running them as a roaming warband, hired muscle for a villain, or the main event of an encounter, players always sit up a little straighter when one hits the board.

This set from Duncan Shadow gives you three distinct sculpts, and honestly the variety is what makes it. You've got a heavily armoured figure wielding an enormous cleaver-style blade held low and ready, a more lightly dressed brawler with a spiked maul in one hand and the other outstretched like he's already picking his next target, and a third wearing a hood and patchwork armour carrying a tall halberd at rest. Three very different personalities, which is genuinely useful when you want a warband that doesn't look like it rolled off an assembly line.

The sculpt quality is brilliant throughout. Faces have real character — jowly, scarred, full of attitude. The armour details are crisp without being overdone, and there's a good mix of texture across leather straps, studded belts, and bare skin that'll give you plenty to work with at the painting stage. The brawler in the centre has a great wide stance and that reaching arm gives the whole pose real energy.

For painting, these respond well to heavy contrast or wash-based approaches, especially on the skin. A warm mid-tone basecoat with a dark flesh wash and some careful highlighting will bring out all those creases and folds nicely. Scale-wise they're chunky enough to read clearly on the table without being unwieldy — genuinely satisfying to hold and paint. If you're looking for something a bit different alongside these, the Forest Ogre by Epic Miniature has a completely different feel and pairs well for a mixed encounter.
These sit naturally in a range of settings — a mountain pass ambush, a mercenary camp, a dungeon boss room. If you're building out a broader monster miniatures collection, three ogres with this much variety between them is a genuinely solid addition.
